Hell is looking for a way to break loose…
Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world’s first murderer, he’s plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it’s killing him.
After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can’t outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she’s thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she’s been trying to forget.
Sam strains Jax’s control over his darkness, but running isn’t an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.
An Author Q & A about the book:
How did you come up with idea for Ruined? Was there a muse that sparked the idea?
I actually got the idea after having a long conversation with a friend about sibling rivalry.
I’d approached my editor with the idea for Entangled’s new (at the time) imprint, Covet. Ruined was loosely based on Cain and Abel, and she loved it. But when I submitted the sample chapters, she felt the characters sounded too young. I set the idea aside and moved on. It was almost a year later, when she came back to me, remembering the plot, and asked me to write it for the NA line.
Did you listen to any music while writing Ruined? I know that you have an intro for the book “Radioactive by Imagine the Dragons” is there any others?
There’s a ton of songs. I’m a big believer in music. Can’t function without it, actually. When I’m writing, I have to have a full playlist. Scenes, characters, the book, they all have a list!

Are you an organic writer or organized/planner type of writer?
Totally 100% organic. The more I try to plan something out ahead of time, the bigger a mess it turns out. Kinda like over cooking chocolate chip cookies. Criminal…
What inspired you to become a writer?
From the time I was little, I was either going to be a writer or a chef. Well, except that short six month stint that I was convinced destiny wanted me to be a jockey…
I was all set to go to the Culinary Institute of America, and was a month or so away from starting classes when it just all clicked. I picked fiction over food.
How I did you realize that writing fiction was the direction for you?
It was actually sort of a spur of the moment choice. It was always going to be food or fiction for me. I’d set my sights on the more reliable choice—steadier paycheck and more solid work—but it just wasn’t meant to be. I’ve never regretted the decision!
Is there is anything you would like to say to your fans and readers of you book?
Thank you! To anyone who has ever picked up one of my books, will pick up one of my books, or even just thinks about picking up one of my books. You’re awesome and I love you.
