Guest Post for In The Pages of a Good Book:
Favorite Scene in the book and why
When I wrote the first draft of Love’s Sorrow / Revenge twelve years ago, the story was sweeter than sweet. It had no hint of sexual thoughts or acts.
Fast forward eleven years, and I realized how much emotion—and emotional responses—were missing due to the negative heat level. I needed to show Anne’s struggle with her body’s desires and fear of being hurt again so that my readers would connect with her. A scene popped into mind, one that I felt gives the reader insight into her conflicted mind.
To set up the scene…Anne is bathing in the river while her young son sleeps on a blanket not far from shore.
Gentle swirls of water caressed my skin, bringing thoughts of Connagher’s strong hands to mind. Unwanted desire rolled over me. My body craved fulfillment and the languid muscles ecstasy produced.
A shiver slid down my spine, and my eyelids jolted open. Pushing upward into a sitting position, I glanced over near Wyatt.
Connagher stood beyond him.
I leapt to my feet, one arm pressed against the wet cotton clinging to my breasts, the other hand attempting to cover the apex of my thighs. Heat licked, flushing me from head to toe.
My pulse thrummed as his gaze roamed my near-naked form.
Sweat dampened the shirt stretched across his shoulders and chest. I thought of the muscles beneath—the ridges and lines of his body, ones my heart and mind warred over wanting to explore.
Swallowing, I returned my focus on his face. The desire within in his eyes as he stared at my body sent heat to my core, and a craving for his tough—his taste—weakened my knees. For the first time in years, I wanted to experience the closeness of intimacy. More than a meeting of bodies…a melding of hearts and minds. The only man I would ever consider doing that with stood mere steps away.
I dropped my hands to my sides, and Connagher’s attention swung back up to my face. Unmoving, I met his fixed stare.
In a heartbeat, he strode forward, water splashing his dusty boots…up his pant legs. He paused before me, green eyes bright with hunger.
Both our chests heaving, we stood in silence.
As though hearing my thoughts, he lifted trembling hands and cradled my face in his warm palms.
He leaned down and swept his mouth across mine.
Lust slammed into me, and I sagged against his hard body to keep upright. Tipping my head to the side, he deepened the kiss, and when his tongue traced the seam of my lips, I allowed him entry.
While not as steamy as my alter ego, Lynn Burke’s tales, I felt this scene kept in line with the first book, yet tastefully shared the inner working of the MC.
I know sex sells. Bare skin on covers, and naughty acts in black text between the covers, but I had to tell this story as the characters dictated. For the Means of Mercy series, that meant keeping the sweet part, but with just a touch of, “Oh yeah!”
Which do you prefer? The hot & steamy? A hint of sexual activity, or the whole she-bang!!?

Embittered by betrayal, Anne MacKay flees London for America, where she learns she’s pregnant with her abusive husband’s longed-for heir. In a society that doesn’t protect, or afford a well-to-do wife’s desire for divorce, Anne decides there is one way to exact revenge: deny the father any knowledge of his child. Sought after by her husband’s henchmen, Anne travels by rail and horseback, far from civilization where silk and stays are worn, let alone thought of. Lies and deceit protect her identity for a time, allowing her to birth—and grow to love—the child who was supposed to be her vengeance. With the help of her loyal and protective business partner, Jude Connagher, and the ranch hands in their Montana Territory valley, Anne attempts to rebuild her life under the shadow of her husband’s wrath. One unwise decision lands Anne in her pursuers’ clutches, tearing her from the ranch, her child, and her growing love for the one man who could redeem her from bitterness. She’s left with no choice but to finally face her husband, knowing her freedom and life hang in the balance.
Terri started writing stories in the 8th grade, when a little gnome whispered in her brain. Gundi’s Great Adventure never hit the best seller list, but it started a long love affair with storytelling.
Today she enjoys an escape to Middle Earth during the rare ‘me’ moments her three young children allow. When not playing toys, picking them back up, or kissing boo-boos, she can be found sprawled on the couch with a book or pencil in hand, and toothpicks propping her eyelids open.
